## Abstract

Contemporary AI agents are largely episodic: they receive a prompt, retrieve context, produce an output, and disappear. Food systems, by contrast, are continuous. They unfold across people, food, places, businesses, and machines, where the meaning of an observation depends on what preceded it, what remains true, and what matters now. An autonomous system operating in the food world must therefore do more than generate responses. It must maintain a persistent understanding of a changing world.

This paper introduces FoodOS, a sovereign cognitive architecture for autonomous systems in the food economy. Each node is an autonomous system that works on behalf of a principal, whether that principal is a person, business, robot, vehicle, or device involved in growing, moving, making, or sharing food.

Physical, digital, and human connections, including cameras, sensors, email, payments, and conversation, supply attributed evidence. Replaceable cognitive neurons interpret that evidence, update a persistent World Model, form memories, and imagine possibilities. Attention continuously balances the immediate present against obligations, preferences, values, and long term goals. Authority determines which possibilities remain private, appear through an adaptive human experience, or become authorised physical and digital actions.

FoodOS separates observation from belief, memory from durable testimony, possibility from commitment, and authority from action. Raw frames, provisional interpretations, and private reasoning remain inside FoodOS. Selected, attributable claims can cross between autonomous systems through FoodBlock, the open protocol that gives them durable interoperability. Connected robots and external services retain their own operational boundaries whilst FoodOS governs each autonomous system's understanding, intentions, and permissions.

The result is an architecture for persistent, situated intelligence in the food world. It remains responsive to live conditions without forgetting history, acts without silently acquiring authority, and cooperates with other autonomous systems without surrendering memory, identity, or control.

**FoodOS provides the cognitive foundation inside each autonomous system. FoodBlock provides the protocol between autonomous systems. FoodX is the network through which these autonomous systems meet the food world.**

## Architecture

### Connections

### FoodOS — Sovereign Cognitive OS

**Evidence → World Model ↔ Memory**

**Cognition → Possibilities**

**Attention → Authority**

**Action** (physical + digital)

**Adaptive Experience** (expression ⇄ response)

### Outputs
- Robots
- Machines
- Digital systems
- Interactive surfaces

### FoodBlock Boundary
Selected durable testimony crosses between compatible nodes. Private cognition does not.

**The present receives the greatest attention. The past remains influential. Authority remains explicit.**

**FoodOS inside the node. FoodBlock between nodes. FoodX across the food world.**

## Key Questions

FoodOS is a persistent architecture for a continuous food world. These questions define what it must resolve before it can be trusted to understand, attend and act.

### The Central Question
How does FoodOS turn a continuous, changing food world into persistent understanding, useful attention and safe action?

**WORLD → EVIDENCE → UNDERSTANDING ↔ MEMORY → POSSIBILITIES → ATTENTION → AUTHORITY → ACTION → NEW EVIDENCE**

### 01. Meaningful Change
When does a live frame reinforce the current state, update the World Model, become an episode, deserve memory or generate a possibility?

### 02. Persistent World Model
What are its entities, identities, beliefs and uncertainties? How do contradiction, expiry and "I do not know" remain visible?

### 03. Memory
What is written, compressed, allowed to fade, corrected or retained? Working, episodic, semantic, procedural and preference memory need different rules.

### 04. Neurons
What is a bounded cognitive worker allowed to receive, interpret and propose? It should not independently declare truth, create permanent memory or grant authority.

### 05. Possibilities
How can FoodOS combine something true now, something remembered, something it could change and a plausible benefit without producing generic noise?

### 06. Attention
How should the present compete with obligations, patterns, goals and exploration? The system may need distinct horizons: now, soon, ongoing, later and exploratory.

### 07. Preferences
How does FoodOS learn values and context without reducing a person to repetitive facts? Every inference needs confidence, provenance, context and correction.

### 08. Authority
Who can permit observation, suggestion, drafting, approval requests or bounded action? Authority must be explicit, revocable, auditable and separate from confidence.

### 09. Boundary of FoodOS
Interpretation, memory, attention, authority and action belong inside. Cameras, services and robots connect to it or execute bounded commands.

### 10. FoodBlock Boundary
Which claims become durable testimony? Raw frames, provisional beliefs, private memory and internal reasoning normally remain private.

### 11. Adaptive Experience
What deserves a surface, an inbox, an ambient signal or silence? The same decision may be expressed differently on phone, checkout, dashboard or voice.

### 12. Evaluation
How will we prove meaningful change, useful memory, grounded novelty, calibrated attention, preserved uncertainty and reliable authority under correction?

**FoodOS is not a synthetic human. It is a different form of cognition: many perspectives, attributed evidence, revisable understanding, deliberate memory and explicit authority across different timescales.**
